National Anthem

I never thought the National Anthem would create such a negative reaction and people would be talking about it this much in a long time. Starting with Collin Kaepernick and his decision not to stand during the Star Spangled Banner generating many others to do the same, it is a weird thing that I never thought I would see.

It is completely their choice and right to do whatever they want to do during the National Anthem and I support their right to do so. I don’t have a problem with people exercising their rights as an American to do what they please and it is completely their decision.

Many high profile athletes have not stood for the anthem and entire teams, whether it be professional, college, or high school have demonstrated some type of response during the anthem before a game. It has generated a lot of buzz in the media throughout this football season since Kaepernick was the first to do so, and there are many people with strong feelings toward the actions of those that do.

Megan Rapinoe, player for the Seattle Reign in the National Women’s Soccer League and for the United States Women’s National Team, joined in Kaepernick’s actions and showed her support for him by kneeling during the anthem as well.

I can understand those that are very upset by these athletes not standing for the anthem. There are many out there that are and are very vocal about it. Rapinoe has stated at it is for racial and LGBT equality.

I have personally seen people sitting for the anthem at sporting events, and they are not just black people. I have also seen white people, like Rapinoe, and other races sitting for it as well. I don’t think it is just a black lives matter thing, like Kaepernick stated, it is for any injustice that an individual feels this nation has. There are a lot of problems in America and there are different ways to show a sign of protest.
