Sanctuary cities have a definition according to CNN, “…jurisdictions that fall under that controversial term — supporters oppose it — generally have policies or laws that limit the extent to which law enforcement and other government employees will go to assist the federal government on immigration matters.”
The Texas governor Greg Abbott has publicly said that he would sign a law that bans sanctuary cities. He has also said that he will cut funding to the city and the university. Abbott has said since Trump was elected that he would support and prioritize the deportation of undocumented citizens and illegal immigrants.
There were many mayors and governors that have stated that they weren’t going to go along with Trump’s policies.
The UNT walkout in favor of turning Denton into a sanctuary city for the undocumented immigrants living in Denton and going to school at UNT. There was a lot of students that attended the walkout in unity with their fellow students and people living in Denton. UNT is very much a liberal campus and the majority of students are in favor of the sanctuary campus to help their fellow students stay in school.
There was a lot of backlash on the Facebook thread posted by WFAA. There were many on there, especially alumni, that were “embarrassed to be associated with UNT.” The general consensus was that sanctuary cities were not a good idea for the campus or for the city. The cut off in funding would be a major blow to both the city and the university.
